CFCL will release the "GEL-LYTE III CM1.95" sneaker collaboration with ASICS, which was first introduced at our VOL.5 presentation during Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Spring/Summer 2024. The sneakers will go on sale at CFCL's directly managed stores and official online store on Friday, October 20th.
This minimally designed sneaker is extremely lightweight and emits only 1.95 kg/CO2-e of greenhouse gas (GHG).※1
A detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was conducted on all processes from material procurement to disposal, including not only the sneaker itself but also the packaging box, resulting in the worldʼs lowest GHG emissions among sneakers currently on the market with figures publicly disclosed. Based on the “GEL- LYTE III OG”, one of ASICS Sportstyle's iconic sneakers that brings together the company's technologies, our commitment to achieve the world's lowest GHG emissions was realized by incorporating ASICS' advanced solutions.※2
As a result, compared to the companyʼs signature sneakers, this sneakerʼs GHG emissions were reduced by approximately 80% from the procurement to manufacturing processes, and by approximately 75% in the transportation process. Furthermore, in order to improve the design, we engaged in co-creation efforts through repeated dialogue regarding the direction of materials, knit density, and selection of parts; and by adding stylish coloring by CFCL, we were able to improve the quality and design. A sophisticated sneaker suitable for modern urban life, the can be worn for a wide range of purposes from walking to special occasions.
※1 Based on a calculation conducted by ASICS and validated by SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance) Japan, in accordance with ISO ISO14067 standard in August 2022.
※2 Based on available industry data for life cycle CO2e emissions as of Sep. 2023.
This collaboration began in 2021 as a result of a conversation between CFCL and the Ministry of the Environment, which raised the question of how to make consumers and businesses more aware of the climate crisis and the challenges of a decarbonized society. Both CFCL and ASICS are committed to the same goal of reducing GHG emissions by 2030, and will continue to take on challenges, while contemplating the form of manufacturing that can be realized using Japanese technology.
DESIGN & ENVIRONMENT In GEL-LYTE III CM1.95, the number of parts that make up the entire body, from the upper to the sole, has been narrowed down to the minimum necessary for functionality and design; reducing the number of parts by more than 50% compared to the GEL-LYTE III OG . The upper and the sock lining mesh are made with recycled polyester yarn dyed using an environmentally friendly solution dyeing technique that simultaneously reduces GHG emissions and water usage during the production process. For the reinforcement parts of the upper, the new minimalistic tape method offers a supportive fit for daily activities, while minimizing material use and waste.
One of the shoeʼs key features is the carbon-negative foam in the midsole and sock lining.※3
This is a newly developed foam material by ASICS that combines multiple bio-based polymers made from sugarcane and other raw materials to provide comfortable wear and no loss of quality while effectively keeping GHG emissions negative.※4
The thick sole design also maintains cushioning properties, for lasting underfoot comfort. In addition, we are working to reduce our environmental impact through the use of 100% renewable energy in our manufacturing processes in Vietnam, the use of biofuels for transportation, and the introduction of recycling measures at our outsourced factories.
※3 The raw materials are derived from sugarcane. The amount of CO2 absorbed by sugarcane during its growth is a negative factor in CO2 emissions, which is greater than the amount of CO2 emissions from the process required to produce the foam material.
※4 New carbon negative foam incorporates a material made from a bio-based polymer derived partially from sugarcane, called "SEPTONTM BIO-series" manufactured by Kuraray Co., Ltd.
