CFCL Sustainable Management Development Report (VOL.2) ②

CFCL サステナビリティレポート(VOL.2)②
While considering the global environmental impact in apparel production, CFCL pursues industrial cooperation with local regions and selects the best domestic materials and transparency in the supply chain. That’s because we think this is as important as improving the functionality of the garment itself. The newsletter will cover three sustainability-related actions taken in the VOL.2 collection.

Continuing from the previous season, CFCL conducts Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and calculates the usage rate of materials that have been certified as responsible for the global environment and fundamental human rights. As a new initiative this fiscal year, we conducted a questionnaire on the SDGs performance guidelines to each supplier.

<LCA Life Cycle Assessment>
As in the world’s most developed countries, the target time for achieving virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions in Japan is 2050. As an interim target for 2030, we need to reduce emissions by 46% compared to 2013.

CFCL completed a formal application in May of this year to obtain “B Corp” certification. Still, many companies worldwide that have already received this certification aim to achieve carbon neutrality “before 2030".

Based on the above, CFCL will implement “LCA”, which will be the first (*) in the Japanese fashion and apparel industry, from VOL.1 of the first season as a concrete action for forming a decarbonized and sound material-cycle society. In this VOL.2, we expand the scope of LCA. First of all, we are searching for the optimum decarbonization approach every day by accurately grasping the carbon emissions generated by the company.

VOL. 1 (released in January 2021) Implementation details:
“POTTERY DRESS Type 1" Greenhouse gas emissions 4.99 kg-CO2e / 1pc (weight 540 g)

VOL. 2 (released in July 2021) Contents of this implementation:
Please refer to the following for the greenhouse gas emissions of “POTTERY series 4 type all types”. We calculated four types (about 11%) out of 36 types for the entire season. We aim to cover all types by 2025.
POTTERY DRESS (long sleeve) 5.17 kg-CO2e / 1pc (600g = 500ml PET bottle container 30g for 20 bottles)
POTTERY KAFTAN (long sleeve) 5.24 kg-CO2e / 1pc (597g = same as above 20)
POTTERY TOP 2.70 kg-CO2e / 1pc (260g = same as above for 9 bottles)
POTTERY SKIRT 4.38 kg-CO2e / 1pc (532g = 18 bottles above)

While updating all of these factors, CFCL aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to virtually zero by 2030 (carbon neutral) and solve social issues such as the SDGs.

* POTTERY DRESS (**) made from recycled PET bottle yarn reduces greenhouse gases by about 50% compared to when it is made from newly oil-mined yarn. (***)
* There is a research result that “one T-shirt (150g) produced with normal cotton emits 3.4kg-CO2e greenhouse gas” (****), and if it is the same weight as one POTTERY DRESS, it is equivalents to greenhouse gas emissions of “10kg-CO2e or more” when made from cotton.
